Project II: Tectonics

This project requires me to do research and explore about ergonomic, anthropometric as well as tectonics. The objectives are to study the relationship between human body and its banal action, to understand the uses of different materials especially the nature of timber, and to articulate the space & form based on my own body measurement. The design principle & elements  learned from project I is to applied in this project. Timber is used as the main material while the supporting material can be either steel or fabric. I have chosen the combination of timber and steel to produce a model which is around 5 m3 with the scale of  1:10. Besides, I have to construct a joinery details with scale of 1:5 and to produce construction drawings. However, there are some area of improvements at the end of this projects as my drawings need to be rendered so that it is more presentable and the shape of model should be further developed in order to make it looks more 3 dimensional.

BANAL ACTION: KNEELING

Kneeling down with supported structure at the back can force ourselves to sit with chest up, and thus enhance our comfort. It can also help to engage core muscle and prevent scoliosis. In comparison to sitting posture in 90 degrees, we will tend to hunch back.

DESIGN ELEMENT & PRINCIPLE:

SHAPE + RHYTHM

  • different height and depth of triangular structure strongly illustrate different size of the shape, and thus showing the rhythm

  • the prominent u-shape shows asymmetrical balance as it is tilted
